Final Exam - Essay

This exam covers all readings, course activities, and lecture content assigned from Modules 01 through 06.

Write an essay response of AT LEAST 250-300 words. In your response, be sure to refer to specific concepts from the readings, lecture notes, and/or discussions, and use these concepts to support your points; citing the course material at least once is required.

Note that outside sources (using Google to find answers, for example) should not be used; your exam essay should be in your own words, using only the course material when needed to support your analysis. Please state the question name or number prior to your answer.

Explain the difference between individual and institutional discrimination, giving examples of each type of discrimination. Then explain how these forms of discrimination are different from prejudice and stereotypes.

1. Thomas Malthus stated that poverty, misery, and famine would be the natural result if population continued to increase. The world's population is increasing at an exponential rate, so what do you think could be done to help create a healthier, happier, and more productive future for the peoples of the planet?

2. Scientists allege that global warming is real, yet some people refuse to accept their findings. Why do you think that there is resistance to believing that global warming is occurring? What are the implications if global warming is real?

3. What kinds of social movements have you been involved with? How effective were they? What were social factors that led to their degree of success?

4. Terrorism is a new evolutionary state of warfare that appears to be here to stay. Why do you think terrorism has occurred? What could be done to decrease the possibility of terrorism occurring in the future?

5. Life is very different in least-developed nations compared to life in the United States. To what extent do you believe that wealthy nations have an obligation to help poorer ones? What do you believe will happen if they don't?

6. Most people prefer to live in peace, not war. What could societies do to increase the possibilities for peace and reducing the possibilities for the use of violence?

7. As you end this course, explain why the sociological perspective is very important in helping students better meet the demands of the world.
