Case: Melanie is a fifth grader in your class. Melanie identifies as a trans-girl, uses she/they pronouns, and overall, feels supported by you and their classmates. However, Melanie recently brought it to your attention that the teacher's aid that works with you regularly misgenders her and dead-names her.

You pull your teacher's aid aside to talk about this issue and she gets defensive. She says she doesn't know what gender is, she confuses it with sexual orientation, and says Melanie doesn't know any better because they are only 10 years old.
