You are in the final term of your post-doc fellowship and looking forward to your new assistant professorship position at the university where you were newly hired. You have always had a line of study in HIV education and have worked hard to secure past funding around effective interventions. You even won a grant for your dissertation to review the effectiveness of the latest HIV-funded prevention programs. However, since the announcement of the upcoming HIV vaccine, funding is slowing in your area of HIV prevention education. As you transition to the new position, you start thinking about shifting areas to bring an impressive grant with you. After all, your new employer emphasized how important it is that you secure funding in your first year. Your tenor clock starts when you start the job!

You see a funding announcement on preventing Covid-19 and the ongoing importance of Covid-19 boosters. You think that might be a good route. After all, HIV and Covid-19 are both viruses. But you have no experience with Covid-19, and you have devoted all your studies to HIV. How different can they be? On the other hand, you are tired of Covid-19 and don't care to be an expert in that area. You feel  pressure to come into your new position with a grant.

What do you do? Chase the Covid-19 grant because you need the money? Or do you stick to your knowledge area, brush up on the upcoming vaccine, and wait for funding for HIV vaccine education to come your way? What if it doesn't come soon?

Read the above scenario and answer the following below:

  1. Explain the implications of mismatching the budget and the idea highlighted in the case scenario. For example, what could happen if the maximum funds available in the grant are not pursued?
  2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of taking a specific approach (beginning with an idea and locating grants versus finding grants before fully developing an idea).
  3. Discuss any ethical dilemmas that the case scenario may present. Consider the impact of these dilemmas given the code of ethics within your current position and/or the grant writing code of ethics.
