Assignment:
Response to Ancient Literature :
For this paper I would like you to write a response paper. The idea of a response is that you do not need to do any research but instead you think about your own reactions to reading the text. (Write your response paper about one of the readings you have done for this class.)
For this response paper you will choose a character, a single scene, or event to focus on. You could write about whether or not a character's actions seemed justified, if an event in a particular story was surprising or strange, or how you emotionally responded to a particular scene or poem, etc. You can also use the ideas from Ancient Ideas on Understanding Literature to help you formulate your response.
For example you could use think about how you felt reading a certain poem or story and why you felt that way. Or you could consider Longinus ideas about the sublime to explain the impact an event in Gilgamesh has on a reader. Or you could use Plato's reasoning of why poetry (including epic) is bad to explain how a certain character's actions in the Mahabharata could have a negative effect on the reader.
The point of the paper is to consider your own response therefore do NOT do any research.
If you want to you may set up an online appointment to meet with me about the paper. See the information about contacting your instructor on the Home page of this course.
Requirements
Choose one of the texts you have read so far. To keep the paper brief choose one aspect, such as a single character, or event to focus on.
- Introduction should introduce the text(s) you are using for your paper and present a clear thesis. The thesis is what you wish to write about in your paper. (See How to Write a Good Thesis.)
- The body of the paper should be your response to the text. Avoid summarizing the plot--I have already read the text so I don't need you to tell me the story. I am more interested in reading your response to the text. You do need to provide examples from the story, however, to explain your response.
- The conclusion should briefly restate your main points or ideas showing how you have proved your thesis.
This response paper should be approximately 2 to 3 pages long. Please use this Example ENGL 2600 paper as an example for formatting.
