Use our discussion forum to review the key differences between criminal and civil law. We will also be discussing the structure of the federal and state court systems. Before posting here, be sure to have completed all assigned readings, and reviewed all required resources and lectures.
PART A: View this video that compares and contrasts civil and criminal law. Why was OJ Simpson tried for murder in criminal court and sued for wrongful death in civil court? Research this landmark case. Explain how, based on standards of proof and other factors, he was found not guilty in criminal court but liable in civil court. Do you agree or disagree with the courts' verdicts? Why?
PART B: This week, we will also delve into the structure of the court system. Understanding this structure is absolutely pivotal to understanding the US Legal System. Read chapter 4 and view the video below regarding the structure of the US Court System.
Explain the general structure of the US Court system. What is the highest court in the system? In which court would you most likely serve as a juror? Next, go to the website for your state court. Explain the structure of your state court system. Again, explain what is the highest court of your state jurisdiction.
Note any differences between your jurisdiction and those summarized by your classmates.
