A retail sales manager was advised by his employee, Chet, that a fellow coworker, Anne, was stealing clothing from the store, FashionMart, where all three of them worked. During store hours and while standing at the cash register, the manager accused Anne of stealing and fired Anne from her position. The manager loudly provided Anne with an explanation for her termination by reiterating Chet's allegations. Next he demanded she turn over her purse which he dumped on the front counter so he could inspect its contents before clamping Anne's arm and forcibly escorting her to his office where he made her wait until the police could be contacted. Anne was embarrassed, tearful, and left to sit in the manager's office for more than an hour before the authorities arrived. After they arrived, the police determined Anne was innocent of any wrongdoing.
