When done in batch mode, industrial scale reations reactants are commonly heated in the reaction vessel until kinetic calculations indicate the 99% of the reactants have been consumed. In the esterification reaction of methanol with acetic acid the reaction follows second order kinetics. If at 69 degrees C the rate constant for the reaction is .0035 L mol-1s-1 and the intitial concentrations of both the methanol and the acidic acid are 7.0 mol L-1. How long should the batch of reactants be maintained at 69 degrees C to ensure 99% reaction?
