1. What are the electron configurations of the following metal ions: Fe3+, Zr4+ and Co3+?

2. Draw a) the high-spin electron configuration for a complex containing Fe2+ and b) the low- spin electron configuration for a complex containing Fe2+. Assume an octahedral geometry for both complexes. Use your chemistry textbook as a reference to answer this question.

3. The absorbance maxima observed for the following cobalt complexes are: ([Co(NH3)6]3+ ?max = 470 nm, [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+ ?max = 560 nm, [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+ ?max = 630 nm, and [Co(NH3)3Cl3] ?max = 680 nm). These transitions can be identified with transitions involving d-electrons.

a) Should the spectrochemical series apply for these complexes? Why or why not? Explain.

b) Is the trend in wavelength the same as you would predict using the spectrochemical series? Explain.
