In chapter 3, we looked at certain neurotransmitters and their effects on the brain. As an individual who lived and experienced the ups and downs of Covid-19, I was specifically intrigued by the effects it had on mental health of adolescents. The impacts are far reaching as the brain is continuously growing and learning in this stage of life. To understand the deeper effects of covid on adolescents, first we must understand the impacts of serotonin on the functioning of the brain. "Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that effects mood, eating, sleep, and sexual behaviour" (Passer, 2020) which is directly correlated with depression. "One defining characteristic of adolescence is the marked increase in social sensitivity and the importance of peers" (Sommerville, 2013). Adolescents begin to relocate their focuses on friends rather than parents. This creates a new "world" for them and opens up the opportunity for both positive and negative experiences in their life, which impacts who they become. The importance of these opportunities are immense and have long lasting impacts which may create struggles that appear later in adulthood. The Covid-19 restrictions limited social interactions for adolescence in a formative time of development. Do u think living through Covid-19 will have negative impacts on adolescents ability to take on the responsibilities and relationships of adulthood?
