Career Speech
You are to pick a career path that you might be thinking about going into or that you know you are pursuing, then give a speech about it. If you have no idea as to what career path you might take, this is a great opportunity to research some paths that interest you and give you speech on that path (it may influence your decision to go into this career path). You may choose to use a visual aid if you would like to.
Speech Details:
- 2 - 4 minutes
- 3 main points
- Must complete an outline
o You will have to turn in an outline for this speech (Check the syllabus for the due date). It must look like the one on page 264 - 268 in the textbook.
- Must include at least one outside resource
o You will need to have a reference page since you are using at least one outside resource. The reference page does not have to be a separate page, it can be a continuation at the end of the outline.
Here are some examples of main points that you might pick to include in your speech:
- Share what made you choose your career path (or decide to research it for this speech).
- Explain the education and other requirements of the career path. There are usually many paths to the same career field, so talk about the different paths there might be.
- Share with your audience what the best and worst thing is about the career path.
- Discuss ongoing education and types of learning that must be done continually to keep up with the career.
- Give an example of the typical work day. Include details such as whether you might work with a group or alone, your typical work schedule and your overall responsibilities.
- Discuss salary range of the career path. Discuss starting salary range as well as potential salary range. Explain career advancement opportunities. For example, if you are a nurse at a hospital, give examples of other places a nurse may work, such as a nursing home or a clinic.
- Describe what personalities are best suited for the career. Share why having this type of personality is important.
Other items to keep in mind when preparing for the Career Speech:
- Review the rubric that is attached below these guidelines to see how you will be graded. Chapters 11-15 will help you get ready for this speech!
- Once you have composed your speech, be sure to practice it at least 5 times from start to finish, using the visual aids (if you choose to use them, since they are not required). Make sure you are staying around the 21/2 - 4 minute time frame, maybe up to 4 ½ minutes. Remember that most people speed up when they actually giving their speech.
