Assignment: Integrating creative arts into literacy instruction in a meaningful manner can address the many student learning types in any given classroom. Creative arts integration is an expressive way to make English language arts more engaging and relevant for younger students.

Throughout this course, you will be working with a K-3 mentor teacher to complete a variety of clinical field experience assignments.

For this assignment, observe your mentor teacher's classroom, particularly noting how the teacher utilizes pre-assessments and integrates the arts into literacy instruction. After your observation, interview your mentor teacher about the process of assessing student skills and needs, and integrating the creative arts with literacy instruction.

Ask how the following are taken into consideration during this process:

• Differentiation and engagement strategies

• Utilizing data from pre-assessments and formative assessments

• Communicating and collaborating with students and families to support learner development and achievement

In the Topic 2 assignment, you will create formative assessments appropriate for your field experience class. Arrange with your mentor teacher to administer one of the assessments to a small group during your next field experience. Collaborate with your mentor teacher to determine a topic or skill that the mentor believes should be pre-assessed.

Spend your remaining field experience hours observing and collaborating with your mentor teacher.

Write a 250-500 word reflection on your observation and interview, including what you observed or learned about:

• Integrating creative arts with instruction for differentiation and engagement

• Utilizing data from pre-assessments and formative assessments
