Assignment:
Alice is 24. She has been a lively and energetic person most of her life. All through high school and college she had lots of friends, was always active in clubs and sports, and did well in school. All of her friends and family thought she would be very successful and it looked as if things were going in that direction after college. Alice got a job at a company that sold water filters to third world countries, was active in social clubs, and was careful to maintain a healthy lifestyle with plenty of exercise. She visited her family frequently and was always interested in going on trips. About a year ago, Alice's friends and family members started noticing a change.
Alice was often late getting to work and when she did arrive she looked tired and had difficulty performing her job functions. She was sometimes short tempered with people she liked and became frustrated easily over silly things. She started drinking coffee to help her "pep up" as she liked to say. Over the course of the year her tardiness started to interfere with her ability to function on the job and she was reprimanded several times. Her friends and coworkers started wondering if she was drinking but she insisted that she was just not getting enough sleep.
On the weekends she would lie on the couch and watch old movies over and over instead of going out with friends or exercising. She told family members that she just didn't care about going places anymore and would rather relax. "I mean, what's the point?" she would say to them. All the things she used to love were no longer fun for her. Even when she tried to do something just to get her friends to stop bugging her it was difficult and she felt tired easily. Some days she would sit on the couch and wonder if it was even worth staying alive if everyday was going to be like the past year.
1. If you were a psychologist seeing Alice, what diagnosis would you give and why? (List and explain the diagnostic criteria from the DSM-5TR that you would use to justify your diagnosis.)
2. What treatment would you recommend? (Be specific about why you think your treatment would work best and CITE your source. The treatment plan should not be your opinion. It should be based upon research that has been done on what works well to treat this disorder.
