Case Studies
Analyze each case study presented in the Blooming Park simulation as if you were the counselor assigned to work with the student. Include the following information:
- Summarize the student, including demographics and developmental information.
- Assess the available information/data and identify the presenting concern(s).
- Propose at least one delivery system service that would be appropriate for the case.
Case Study 1
Gwen Katz, 10, is a fifth-grade student at Max Aasen Elementary School. Gwen comes from a middle class background and is Jewish; she is an only child who lives with parents. Gwen has attended the school since second grade, when her family moved from another state. She is identified as gifted and participates in the school's gifted program for both math and language arts. Gwen has always been shy, but she has always had friends, especially among the other "smart girls." This year, though, she is struggling quite a bit socially. Former friends have shunned her, and she has been bullied by two of her classmates. Her parents have had several conferences with the school to discuss the bullying. Gwen has become withdrawn, and her once-stellar grades have suffered.
Case Study 2
Amir Malik, 15, is a ninth grade student at Sylvia Plath High School. He lives with his father, mother, and younger sister; his older brother is a freshman at an Ivy League school. Amir's father is the chair of the prestigious computer science department at a nearby university, and the family is well off financially. Amir is Muslim, and his parents were born in the United Arab Emirates. He has always been an A student, but lately his grades have been slipping.
