Question: We use synapomorphies to build phylogenetic trees that represent the pattern of evolution. Vestigial and lost traits (eg, leglessness in snakes, loss of scales in some fish, lunglessness in Plethodontid salamanders, rudimentary wings in kiwi birds) complicate that process. Explain the danger vestigial and lost traits present for building an accurate phylogeny. Darwin discusses their role in classifying animals. What was his position? How did he recommend we approach vestigial traits in classification?
