Assignment:
In Media & Culture., Campbell, Martin and Fabos explain the cultural appeal of mass media, such as television, novels, videogames or film according to a range of qualities, including:
- The "comfort of familiar stories" (repeating character types and storylines formats we've seen before).
- "Innovation" (an original show in some respects, maybe in what it's about or how it's made).
- "Wide range of messages" (touching on several different social/cultural/political issues).
- "Challenging the nostalgia for a better past" (makes us re-think the past, e.g. it's set in the 1950s but society isn't as enlightened it is today).
In your response, please identify one media text of your choice (e.g. a show, film, novel, videogame, graphic novel) and explain it's cultural appeal in relation to each of these qualities as they are defined in the reading. You should be as specific as you can in your explanation (e.g. describing particular scenes, comparison to other media texts, describing your experience of it).
To support your analysis, you should quote an online source about your chosen media text which supports part of your interpretation of it (e.g. a review, interview, editorial, article, etc.) - and include a link to that source.
