The volume of a substance increases with increasing temperature and decreases with increasing pressure. These properties, respectively are tabulated quantitatively as the cubic expansion coefficient, α = (1/Vm) (δVm/δT)P, and the isothermal compressibility, k = (-1/Vm) (δVm/δP)T. What units must these quantities have? Obtain algebraic recipes for the cubic expansion coefficient and the isothermal compressibility for (i)an ideal gas and for (ii)a gas having the EOS, P = RT/(Vm-b).
