The continuum of drug use spans from total abstinence to chemical dependency with various stages in between. Many prevention programs are designed to intervene at different points along this continuum. Once chemical dependency is fully developed it then falls out of the scope of practice for the prevention specialist; nevertheless, the prevention specialist must be able to recognize substance abuse and dependency so that appropriate referrals can be made. There are also many substances of abuse with which the prevention specialist should be familiar.
