This assignment requires that students develop a strong understanding, and ability to analyze, the collective bargaining process.

Part 1: Collective Bargaining

Students must find an incident of collective bargaining. The incident may be selected from the federal, or any provincial, jurisdiction. The incident should contain a public information to ensure that there is enough material for study.

There are many methods to determine an appropriate collective agreement. Some potential avenues to find an appropriate include:

- Industrial Relations in Canada (your textbook)

- news websites such as The Globe and Mail

- consider your friends and family - have they been involved in collective bargaining

- visit a public site such as The Alberta Bargaining Update

Ensure that when determining the collective agreement, and collective bargaining process, you are certain that there is enough public information to complete the entire assignment.

In Part 1 students provide an overview of the entire bargaining process. Students should:

i) provide the facts including the parties, the history of their relationship, previous bargaining and work stoppages, any further information that you find appropriate and relevant;

ii) explain what occurred in the selected round of collective bargaining;

iii) detail any contentious issues;

iv) did you think that the parties were adopted distributive of interpretative collective bargaining tactics? Why?; and

v) briefly, explain how was the agreement settled. For instance, did the parties mutually agree, was there third party intervention (conciliation as required in some provinces and optional in others), strike or lockout prior to reaching an agreement.

Part 2: Dispute Resolution Processes (1-2 pages):

Did the parties engage in conciliation? Explain the conciliation process, whether it was used or not adopted, and its impact on the bargaining.

Part 3: Collective Agreement Key Features and Language (2-3 pages):

Review the collective agreement. Provide the wording of three issues/articles that were contentious between management and union. That is, what articles did the parties experience difficulty in mutually agreeing (look to media for this information). If you cannot find this information pick three articles that you believe were contentious and explain why you think the articles were contentious.

After including the collective agreement language, explain what the impact of the collective agreement was. That is, do you think that either management or the union was successful in the agreed upon language? Why?
