1. Define stratification and explain the four types: slavery, caste, feudal/estate, and social class. Is social stratification universal across societies and cultures in the world?
2. Explain the concepts social class and socioeconomic status. Describe the traditional pattern of social mobility in the United States. Will today's young people most likely experience this pattern of social mobility? Why or why not?
3. How is social stratification tied to social inequality? Compare the conflict and functionalist perspectives' explanations for the existence of stratification systems in societies.
4. Define and compare the concepts race and ethnicity. What does it mean to say that race is a social construction? How does this definition better explain the role of power and privilege and the continued significance of race in American society?
5. Explain racial privilege. Why is whiteness often invisible as a racial identity, and how does this perpetuate privilege?

10. In the United States, women typically spend more time than men on household chores and family obligations. How would a structural functionalist explain this? How would a conflict theorist explain this?
11. Discuss gender inequality in contemporary social institutions including media, education, the family, the workplace, and politics. Provide evidence and examples.
12. Using sociological terms and concepts, explain why a society undergoing rapid social changes may experience anomie.
13. Drawing on sociological terms and concepts, identify three elements necessary for the success of a social movement.

15. Identify three factors that may contribute to social change within a society.
