Privilege-Much of our work in this course looks at and tries to understand who has privilege and power and who does not. Privilege, as related to class, gender, race, ethnicity, geography, ability, sexual orientation, etc. will be explored throughout the semester. For this paper, you are going to look internally-at your own privilege, power, and lack thereof. Answer the following questions:

  1. Explain the concept of unearned merit and privilege and discuss this in terms of why it is important to understand as a social work professional.
  2. Compose a personal "Privilege Statement." For example, in terms of privilege and the social categories, one could say..."I am a transgender Black woman who has spent most of her life living at or below the poverty threshold. My race and my gender identity take privilege and power away from me. However, I have a college degree, which gives me some power. I am able bodied, grew up in a nuclear household with loving parents. My experience is shaped by my subordinate identities that lack power but I am acutely aware of those ways in which privilege has shaped experiences as well."? Think about these social categories when writing your reflection paper.
  3. When have your attributes/social categories (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, class, geography) provided you with privilege?
  4. Discuss an experience where powerlessness or a lack of privilege has been present in your life experience. How has this shaped who you are and how you relate to the world around you?
  5. Prior to this assignment, did you consider something such as class or geography a privilege? Why or why not?
  6. Does privilege or lack thereof more powerfully shape your personal experiences? Why? How do you think that makes you similar to or different from other students? How do you think that makes you similar to or different from the clients you would like to serve as a social work professional?
  7. Why is it important to consider your own power, privilege, and position as a social work professional? How does this exploration help to ground you in social work practice that is anti-oppressive in nature?
