Concepts vs. Meanings

Purpose:

Sometimes, the people doing the criminal justice job discover that the ideals of the criminal justice system don't ring true in the real world, day-to-day job experiences. This is especially true in the concept of "Serve and Protect". This assignment lets you explore your understanding of the concept versus the true meaning of maintaining "law and order" and "serve and protect" which are sometimes at direct odds with the other.

Instructions:

From the perspective of working professionals in the 3 major CJ systems - law enforcement, corrections and courts - answer the following for each of the three different systems:

? Explain how the concept of "serve and protect" and "maintaining law and order" in a diverse society clash when working in the three major systems of criminal justice. Give examples.

? Discuss what skills, knowledge and practices need to be finely honed and in place to both "serve and protect" and "maintain law and order" at the same time in each of the three systems.

? Discuss how the perceptions of society toward people working in each of the three major systems alters the ability of the CJ professional to "serve and protect" while "maintaining law and order". Give examples.

? Discuss why much of the public has lost faith in each of our three major systems. Give examples of real-life events that may have contributed to this loss of faith.
