Source: a minimum of three scholarly sources In the term paper, you will apply and analyze interpersonal theories, concepts or competencies we have learned in this course by either examining your own intrapersonal communication or the communication competencies of others. The goal of this assignment is for you to use a primary source (i.e. self-analysis, text, interview, case study etc) and to analyze and comment upon the interpersonal dynamics that are evident in your analysis. Below are some ideas to get you thinking about this term paper. If you wish to pursue your own ideas, be sure to consult with me prior to starting your work.

Paper Option #1 - Self and Others: Select two readings from the chapters and articles we’ve explored and examine how the insights you gain from these readings can be applied to understanding yourself as an interpersonal communicator.

Part One: Explain the communication concepts developed in the readings and discussions;

Part Two: Describe and assess how the insights from these readings apply to you as an interpersonal communicator; and

Part Three: Analyze your close personal and voluntary relationship with another and consider how the key insights can be applied to the way that you relate interpersonally. Use concrete examples from one or more of your personal relationships to describe how you relate and evaluate the effectiveness of your relationship. Make sure you are focusing on the relationship and its dynamics instead of on individual communication behaviours.

- Critical Analysis of a Chapter on Interpersonal Communication: Select one reading from a chapter read for this course and critically assess the insights you gain or fail to receive from this particular reading.

Part One: Explain the concepts developed in the Chapter, including a brief explanation of each of the key theories and approaches;

Part Two: Review related literature with at least two other sources from scholarly literature in the field that explore concepts and key terms used in the articles/sources you’ve selected, and offer a summary of each source; and

Part Three: Discuss and evaluate how the related literature you’ve selected affects your understanding of the original Chapter and the concepts it examines.

Paper Option #3 - Interview with an Interpersonal Professional/Scholar: Interview a professional or scholar on the topic of interpersonal communication. Be sure to explore her/his work or research prior to the interview and to create a series of questions, which you will also submit along with your term paper.

Part One: Introduce the purpose of the paper, the expert, and the communication theory(ies), concepts and/or competencies that the professional/scholar will discuss. Outline the questions that you will/have asked the expert prior to your meeting with him/her;

Part Two: Demonstrate that you have fully researched the theory, the person or organization in question and show how his/her contribution affects close and personal relationships; and

Part Three: Discuss whether or not and perhaps how this interview has changed or challenged your perception of interpersonal communication. If it has not changed or been challenged, perhaps discuss why this is. (The term paper are the 3 option above)
