Problem
Nabin is a 34-year-old male that was admitted to the hospital for pain in his lower right abdomen. The doctor just informed him that he has appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix), and will need surgery immediately. Nabin will need to stay in the hospital until surgery is performed and he has recovered. You are a healthcare worker that will be preparing him for surgery. You go into his room to check his vitals and to collect more information. While speaking to him, you notice he is rubbing his hands together and breathing.
Part I: List the NURSE Strategy
A. The first NURSE Strategy is "Name the emotion". Name two emotions Nabin might be feeling.
B. The second NURSE Strategy is "Understand the emotion". How might you demonstrate to Nabin that you understand his emotions?
C. The third NURSE Strategy is "Respect the client". Provide one example of how you would show respect for Nabin.
D. The fourth NURSE Strategy is "Support the client". Write a statement you might say to Nabin to show support for him and what he is going through.
E. The fifth NURSE Strategy is "Explore further". Write a question or statement you might ask Nabin in order to get more information.
Part II: Explain the Importance
A. Explain the benefit of using the NURSE strategy in this scenario.
Nabin explains that he's from a different state and he's here for a work conference. His wife is at home alone with their 3-year-old son and 4-month-old daughter, and he has no family around. He's never had surgery or a procedure done before and is not sure how he will do. He explains that he's in a lot of pain physically, and doesn't know what to expect.
