Question 1) Think about the Piaget's and Vygotsky's theories which support a social constructivist approach to learning and behavior. Define this term and explain the beliefs of each theorist in terms of learning and behavior. Do you believe the two go hand in hand or do you believe they are two separate entities? Discuss the adult's role in guiding the child's behavior in the early childhood classroom and the importance of developing self-regulation to the child's success both in school and out.
Question 2) Beth Janison is a new first-grade teacher in a school with a growing minority population. At Beth's first meeting with her mentor teacher, he explains that he tells his students and parents "if they can't speak English, they better learn!"
For this dilemma, identify the ethical principles that can guide Beth's response to her mentor teacher. Is she obligated to agree with him? What if she feels that children and families should be encouraged to maintain their first language?
