I believe that there should be a law that says high schools should have an 'adulting' class or a series of classes that could be interchanged. These classes should be specifically geared towards things you need to know in adulthood. Some examples of what could be taught are growing food, car maintenance, budgeting, simple cooking, and basic tax knowledge. I know of a high school near me has a class for 'car maintenance' called auto technology, but this class is not available for everyone. This class is for people who want to go into the automotive field. I know some of the high schools closest to my area have done away with the 'home economics' class, for one reason or another.
The home economics class I took in high school was very beneficial as we learned how to do basic mending of clothing, about different countries foods and cultures, and simple grocery budgeting. Although, we did not spend much time on each subject, we at least got to have a little experience in it. The basic mending skills that I learned in class helped me later when I needed to patch holes in clothing and sew buttons back on to items.
There will be people who do not think that this should be included or mandatory. I know many people say that parents need to teach their kids this stuff. I agree that parents should teach their kids, but some parents do not have the means or the knowledge to teach them. By investing in classes that give them the ability to learn more about the skills that they will need and use in their adult lives we will have a more productive society. If we give high schoolers the option to take these courses, even as an elective, many kids would be interested.
