Questions: Identify two or more questions identified and/or addressed by the author. It is often easier to identify the thesis or main argument(s) of the author when you can figure out what question or questions they are seeking to answer. Don't attempt to do this till you've read the assigned chapter in its entirely or you will not have enough perspective.

  1. Now attempt to answer the questions you have identified. Ideally, you are getting to the main purpose and argument of the author's writing. Note: he gets at several main arguments as this is an introduction chapter. Identify a few of these main arguments.
  2. If you haven't already addressed this, explain the author's references to "symbolism", "motivation", "justification", and "structure". Why are these important to the author's question or explanations of religion and terrorism?
  3. Does author support primary focus on the perpetrator? If not, who else should we focus on? (Use terms of author whenever possible and highlight them for retention and study in your notes)
  4. What does the author say about claims that terrorists are violent psychopaths? And, do terrorists call themselves "terrorists"? Why or why not? Any other major arguments made by the author about our notions about terrorists or their notions about themselves?
  5. What do you think about this reading and what you have learned from it? Can you apply any key points or descriptions to politics or events in the U.S. recently or in the past?
