When an acid or a base is added to a buffer, a double-displacement reaction will occur. The acid or base will be neutralized, forming a neutral salt or water plus the conjugate of the buffer. For example, if the base NaOH is added to a buffer containing HCN and NaCN, the base will react with the acid HCN as shown:

NaOH(aq) + HCN(aq) ---> NaCN(aq) + H2O(l)

Complete the following chemical equations to show what happens when or is added to a buffer solution made from HF and KF .

Identify the reaction that occurs when the acid HBr is added to the buffer solution: HF(aq) KF(aq) add HBr and which two others:

which two are needed Multiple Choice:

a) HF(aq) + KBr(aq)
b) H2O(l) + KF(aq)
c) H2O(l) + KBr(aq)
d) HF(aq) + KF(aq)
e) HBr(aq) + KF(aq)
f) HF(aq) + HBr

Identify the reaction that occurs when the base KOH is added to the buffer solution. HF(aq) and KF(aq) add KOH:

which two are needed Multiple choice:

a) HF(aq) + KBr(aq)
b) H2O(l) + KF(aq)
c) HF(aq) + KF(aq)
d) KOH(aq) + HF(aq)
e) H2O(l) + KBr(aq)
f) KF(aq) + KOH(aq)
