Question 1. In Chapter 11 in Teaching Literature to Adolescents, the authors provide several strategies and suggestions for formative reading assessment in the classroom. Select one strategy that you have either seen used in your practicum site or that you would be particularly interested in implementing. Identify the strategy, explain student expectations for the strategy and what it is assessing. If you have observed the strategy, discuss whether it was effective. If you are simply interested in an approach, discuss why you believe it would be an effective strategy.

Question 2. Standardized testing is a necessary part of middle and secondary schooling. Many students are tested for their reading skills once or twice a year by the state. Some high school seniors are not able to graduate until they pass a state-issued reading test. Explain how you might instruct and assess your students' reading comprehension without "teaching to the test" or using rote activities. Offer strategies from your readings.
