Question - Imagine that you were arrested and offered a plea deal for a crime that you absolutely did not commit. You have a family that you take care of and a well paying job. You never had any problems with the law or previous arrests, but the evidence that they have against you is pretty convincing. The crime warrants a three year prison sentence, but the State Attorney offers you a plea deal of three years probation instead of state prison. In order for this deal to work, you would have to plea guilty. In essence, you do not want to go to prison and run the risk of breaking your family up and losing your job. However, at this point, the only thing you can do to avoid that is accept the plea deal. What would you do? Explain your thoughts, emotions and feelings about this scenario and how it makes you feel. Further, define plea bargaining. Identify if there are any benefits of plea bargaining? Last, explain some of the cons of accepting a plea bargain.
