Discussion of the Topic of Study

The focus of this present work is the increasing rates of depression and anxiety within the African American (AA) community in urban areas. While the rates of depression have empirical links to both demographic and psychosocial variables a key relationship that needs examination is the mediating impact of collective trauma that is experienced in the community through police brutality. In this work the author argues that collective trauma significantly increases the rates of depression and anxiety within urban AA communities. Additionally, this experience (the moderating impact of collective trauma) is unique to the AA community given the historical and structural antecedents of police-based brutality.
