After working for several years as a sub-contractor developing skills, experience, reputation and contacts in the residential construction industry, you have decided to go the next step and start your own business as a domestic building in Victoria. As part of this process you have recently completed CPC50220 - Diploma of Building and Construction (Building).
In this role you will be carrying out (or managing or arranging the carrying out of) all components of domestic building work for the construction, renovation, improvement or maintenance of a home.
You will be located in the suburb you currently live. You will register the business as a company. You will employ:
- 1 person full time to help administer your business,
- 1 person part-time as a general maintenance person, and
- A number of subcontractors on a project-by-project basis
In starting up your business, you must ensure you establish all the registrations, documentation and business procedures required to comply with the legislation and regulations that apply to your business as a domestic building contractor in Victoria.
Make a draft set of business guidelines that will become formal policies and procedures for the business outlined in the business scenario.

- Health and Safety - how the business will establish, manage and communicate WHS requirements including:
- Creating a safe workplace
- Clarifying workers' rights and responsibilities
- Apply for necessary approvals or permits
- Induction processes
- Guidelines for noise abatement and working hours for the business
- A plan for rehabilitation and return-to-work for injured workers
- Environmental Management Plan - how the business plans to meet the GED and other legislative requirements, including:
- details on environmental impact and managing waste caused by business activities
- policy on using renewable materials over non-renewable
- policy on using low energy materials over high energy materials
- Record keeping - document security
