As HR Manager, you check your company's Glassdoor reviews weekly and one post raises concern:

"This company discriminates against older workers. I went for an interview and the interviewer made note that the email address was AOL. He joked that only grandparents and old people use AOL. I am only 42 and well qualified for the job. I was offended by the comment and while the recruiter's feedback was very positive after the interview, I didn't get the job. Given that it's a younger start up culture, I feel they discriminate and have a biased against experienced workers."

You conducted a detailed analysis which was a review of all candidates that applied over the past 6 months, approaching the review as follows:

  • Assessed age from the resume (estimated based on graduation dates), as well as identified the email domains for each candidate
  • Pulled the acceptance/rejection rate of both those that applicants as well as those that came in for an interview
  • Reviewed performance rate of recent hires
  • Layered in details of department, interview team and hiring manager

Your Findings:

  • Rejection rate of Applications: is significantly (statistically) higher for applicants over 40 years of age with one hiring manager
  • 90-Day Retention rate of new hires: significantly (statistically) lower for those 40 years and older, whose manager is under 30 years of age
  • Focus groups conducted revealed issues that managers were uncertain on how to lead a multi-generational workforce, weren't accustomed to adapting different communication needs and expectations of their staff, and that junior staff felt they weren't receiving enough coaching on their professional development

Could you present recommendations on how to improve the abilities of: 1) the "Problem Manager" and 2) managers who are younger than those on the team they lead and/or who lead multi-generational teams.

Propose one recommendation for each of the two areas of concern. In addition to providing details of each recommendation, identify measures or metrics you would use to track to determine whether your recommendation had the desired impact or change in behavior.
