Bekesy's place theory attempts to explain the complex mechanism by which the structures within the cochlea distinguish different frequencies of sound. The theory relates peak vibration along specific areas within the cochlea to the perception of specific frequencies. There is quite a bit or research to back up the basics of the theory. However, a problem with the theory is that it predicts that adjacent frequencies would produce identical patterns of vibration, yet people can distinguish between those frequencies. A second idea is called the temporal theory.

What is a brief description of each theory, ten compare the two theories on their ability to explain pitch perception.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
