In the 2010s, dramatic social revolutions and forms of social change have appeared in many Middle Eastern countries, including Syria. The civil war, strife, and violence in Syria have had notable, if not catastrophic, effects on people. In this article, the author reflects on the circumstances in Damascus from the everyday perspective of people living through the crisis. Read about it here.

In this article, the author relates everyday perspectives from Damascus that reflect the tragedy of the Syrian Civil War, the rise of ISIS, and the troubling effects of these crises on the people of Syria. Read the article and apply it to the perspectives from the textbook. You should consider reflecting on examples from the article that relate to, and explain, perspectives including genocide, ethnocide, forced assimilation, and cultural colonialism, as well as globalization and the modern world system. As you consider the crisis in Syria, do you believe that these experiences of refugees and geopolitical strife will become more common in other regions of the world in coming years?
