Explain Over the many years of nursing in entirety, there has been vast advances when it comes to a nurses role and scope of practice as well as how that contributes to improved patient outcomes and safety. Evidence-based practice (EBP) has helped facilitate these advancements as modern technology improves, the research capabilities and resources also improve. When EBP was initially introduced, it lacked research studies and resources available to those studying chronic illnesses and patient safety. However, EBP now is able to help facilitate patient's receiving the best possible treatment on an individualized basis, giving patients optimal care that targets reducing clinical problems (Zimmerman, 2017). EBP includes not only patients and the nurses who are at bedside, but involves the entire healthcare team, researchers, and policy makers in order to gather necessary evidence, evaluate said evidence, and then implement these changes into policy for the sake of quality improvement and patient safety. Not only has research evolved in the nursing profession, but the responsibilities and access to the profession itself has also evolved. In the late 1800's, Mary Eliza Mahoney made her mark on the nursing industry by breaking through barriers that previously excluded colored women from becoming a nurse.
