Question: As tumors develop, the extracellular matrix surrounding them changes to become denser and more stiff.

1) Explain why this could be (no need to mention any specific proteins here, but it would be insufficient to say higher levels of ECM proteins are produced). The stiff, dense extracellular matrix promotes tumor mgression in cancer cell extrinsic as well as cancer cell intrinsic ways. (i.e., ECM's impact on a tumor cell's environment vs. its impact on a tumor cell itself).

2) Explain one extrinsic mechanism and one intrinsic mechanism where the ECM promotes tumor cell growth or survival or resistance to death to eventually lead to worsening cancer. (There may be several. Mention at least one protein for each.) Extra Credit: How might these factors promote not only tumor growth, but resistance to therapies?
