A sample of magnesium with a mass of 1.00 g is burned in oxygen to produce an oxide with a mass of 1.66 g of magnesium oxide. But a3.00 g sample of Mg dissolves in nitric acid to give 18.3 g of magnesium nitrate, which gives 4.98 g of MgO when heated to 1000 degrees Celsius.
