Explain methanol and methylene chloride

If caffeine is soluble in methanol as well as methylene chloride then why couldnt I use methanol to extract caffeine from the aqueous portion? and why did I extract the aqueous phase two times with 50ml of DCM rather than once? And if caffeine has no odor, then why did the caffeine i extracted had a faint smell of tea?
