Thomas:

Thomas has had a successful career in HR management. At 35 years old, he is a certified HR professional and Associate VP Human Resources in a large multi-site electronics retailer. After 10 years of marriage, his wife moved out to live with another partner and filed for divorce. They have three children ranging in age from 5 to 10 years old. He was angry at his wife's infidelity and became involved in a contentious and bitter struggle over custody which dominated his attention. As a result, his work performance deteriorated. When he lost custody, it impacted very negatively on his self-esteem and confidence. He now lives in the family home on his own and has withdrawn from most of his social contacts.

His manager drew him aside recently and suggested that he seek help as his productivity had plummeted. He went to his GP who diagnosed clinical depression and placed him on antidepressant medication. This was a significant blow to someone who had always viewed himself as a problem solver and 'can do' person. He decided to seek advice on his options and made an appointment to see you. At the first meeting, he reveals that has been diagnosed with depression and ask for your opinion about what he should do now.
