In the class sessions, an emphasis was given to having the students apply a theme in which to understand there is an inherent tension experienced within healthcare services organizations and depicted by "the clinical thinking and the business thinking". It was emphasized that while the course addresses the financial aspects of health care organizations (part of the "business thinking"), the "clinical thinking" is necessary to maintain the purpose of the organization as an entity that provides healthcare services, and both the "financial thinking" and the "clinical thinking" must be taken into account when making management decisions. With this in mind, please click on and read the article entitled: "Overloaded Pharmacists Warn They're Making Fatal Mistakes" ("How Chaos at Chain Pharmacies is PuttingPatients at Risk") from the February 1, 2020 Late Edition of the New York Times and discuss the issues indicated in the following:
1. First, before considering the article, explain the meaning and nature of the clinical- business tension relationship within the operations and management of the healthcare organization.
2. From the article, discuss whether you see any illustration, evidence, of the clinical - business tension and why you believe this consideration is, or is not, a factor in the operation and management of the healthcare services organization referred to in the article.
3. If the clinical- business tension is evident in the article, identify the clinical and business practices that are apparent and how they generate the operational conflict and tension, including from a financial perspective.
4. Explain whether similar practices are found within other health care organizations (e.g. hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient facilities, etc.),and consider referring to other articlesor material as support and examples for your explanation.
5. Given that the article and healthcare services organizations exemplify the clinical - business tension, how can administrators/managers (whetherwith clinical and/or business trainingand orientation) properly function and resolve the related operational processes within the healthcare services organization.
