QUESTION 1
An iron (II) complex of the formula FeL5 2+ might have either square pyramidal or trigonal bipyramidal geometry. Would it be possible to differentiate between these geometries on the basis of a magnetic susceptibility? How would the number of unpaired electrons differ in the two geometrie if the complex has low spin?

(The d-orbital splitting for trigonal bipyramidal geometry has two sets of degenerate orbitals with a non-degenerate dz2 orbital of highest energy)

QUESTION 2
A student measures the magnetic susceptibility of NiCl4 2- and obtained a value of 3.2
?B. A value of 0.0 ?B was obtained for Ni(CN)4 2-. What do these values tell you about the geometry and d-orbitsl splitting for the two compounds?
