Question: Studying figurative language examples
• Search for online texts from blogs or any social media platform to find 4 different instances of figurative language usage between people.
• Analyze each instance to show how linguistic and non-linguistic knowledge (knowledge about the habits, traditions, customs, common jokes etc.) contribute to successful communication between the participants.
• Explain the instance and name the figurative language device being used (e.g. verbal irony, metonymy)
• Explain the literal interpretation Vs. the figurative interpretation (based on the given context)
• Add any helpful comments to elaborate on your explanation.
• Write 4 pairs of sentences: each pair should contain 1 common phrase which is used as a different argument. (e.g. the phrase "the students" could be the agent in one sentence and the patient in the other).
• Explain in few sentences what you have found to justify /support your answer. IMPORTANT NOTES:
• Make sure you find your figurative language examples from real people's real language use: please do not write imaginary examples of figurative language, because this will not serve our purpose.
• Examples given must not be from the book.
• Use your own words to explain the ideas. Explain in detail to avoid ambiguity, misunderstanding and losing marks.
• Pay attention to your spelling and grammar.
