Your best friend, Jonathon, spends all his free time writing computer programs which interact with Windows operating system. He currently informed you that during fall break he had written malware which randomly erases files and displays weird messages day before Independence Day (July 3) at exactly 1:00 p.m. He plans to distribute Trojan horse, called Happy Birthday America, via attachment to e-mail message. Also included with e-mail message is hidden program which sends same e-mail message to all e-mail addresses in user's address list. E-mail message with attachment will be sent as spam day after finals in May, so that it will have ample time to be distributed to millions of computers worldwide before July 3. You know that large software company presents hefty reward of $250,000 for turning in unscrupulous programmers.

What type of costs would computer owners or businesses have to deal with as result of this kind of activity?

Explain if you think it is right to inform on friend when no profit is involved in crime. Write down reasons why it is, or is not, right to inform on Jonathon.

Write in your discussion who you would notify (that is, Jonathon's parents, dean of students, police, or software company offering reward) if you select to turn him in. Why would you select that person or group?
