Emilio Gambino is a 79-year-old male. Mr Gambino makes an appointment to see his doctor when he notices that he is going to the toilet more frequently. The urine frequency is worse at night and is now interrupting his sleep. He worries he may be incontinent, so gets up to the toilet. However, he voids only small amounts of urine.
Explain why an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) is measured in males with the urinary symptoms experienced by Mr Gambino.
Mr Gambino has been prescribed Ciprofloxacin.
