INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION:

The desire to manage conflict peacefully is not new. World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) resulted in tens of millions of deaths around the world. The destructive nature of World War I spurred the international community to create the League of Nations in 1920, a body that was intended to prevent another major war from occurring through institutionalizing the concept of collective security, whereby any member was obligated to come to the aid of any other member who was attacked.

Although it was ultimately unsuccessful, in part due to the failure of the United States to join, the League of Nations specifically promoted a number of conflict management mechanisms that are now taken for granted in the international system, including efforts at disarmament and the management and settlement of disputes through negotiation and arbitration. With the onset of World War II, the League of Nations collapsed, but the idea of an international organization designed to promote international peace and security continued. Following World War II, the international community created the United Nations, updated to reflect lessons learned as a result of the failures of the League and the devastation of World War II.

This first journal will help you to begin to understand some basic conflict management mechanisms.
