Question: Like all great novels, The Color Purple has a message to send. Those who read Celie's letters to God carefully will recognize hints of that message early in the story. However, readers must take a long journey with Celie and her closest friends and family members to see the themes of the novel fully materialize. In your opinion, what is the strongest or most obvious theme in The Color Purple, and how does the novel express that theme? Is it mostly through character development-and, if so, which characters and how do they change? Are symbols more central to the expression of Walker's central message? If so, what are the novel's key symbols? Does some other element of fiction, such as plot structure or the use of irony, play the largest role? First, state what you believe to be the novel's central theme. Then explain in general terms how this theme is developed.
