66-700539-SEM2-A Cellular and Molecular Basis of Cancer
AIM: This module will provide the you with an understanding of the major cellular and molecular changes that occur during cancer development. The exact role of these changes in specific tumour types will be illustrated.
It will extend and apply the knowledge gained in the Cell Biology and Molecular Biology/Molecular Diagnostics modules.
Learning Outcome 1: Explain in depth the cellular basis of cancer and relate cellular origin to nomenclature of the major tumour types.
Learning Outcome 2: Critically discuss the proposed mechanisms of tumour development, including the stem cell theory and stochastic models of tumour development, and hereditary mechanisms of tumour development.
Learning Outcome 3: Hypothesise how disrupting key cell signalling mediators affects cellular behaviour and tumour development.
Learning Outcome 4: Discuss the relative merits of diagnostic and screening tools for the detection of cancers.
Cellular origin and nomenclature of cancers Hallmarks of cancers
Grading and staging of cancers
Tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes in malignant transformation Hereditary cancers and Knudson's two-hit model
Cancer stem cell theory
The multi-step model of tumour formation Cancer biomarkers for diagnostics and screening
Therapeutic options: Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immune therapy and novel therapeutics
The conceptual review must reflect and effectively communicate a good level of knowledge and understanding of the hallmarks of cancer relating to a specific cancer. Higher marks are awarded for clear independent insight and critical awareness of relevant concepts which are at the forefront of the cancer field.
