Case Study: Philosophies for continuous quality improvement give a framework for high-performing organizations to have the necessary tools and approaches to constantly improve leadership, management, processes, and operations to successfully implement improvements and innovations (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). The six-sigma model strives to eliminate errors in existing procedures by utilizing a method of (DMAIC) define, measure, analyze, improve, and control (John Hopkins Medicine, 2022). To address the increase in complications in an operating room the first step would be to define what the complication is. For example, an increase in surgical site infections (SSI). Next would be to measure the defined complication (how many SSIs have been reported). Analyzing the data would entail a deep dive into any plausible reason that there has been an increase in the number of SSIs. Perhaps it is found that these SSIs are attributed to one surgeon, nurse or OR room. Observation of any of the potential causes of the increased number of SSIs would also provide an opportunity to find the potential reasons for the increase. Once the cause has been identified, collaboration on a strategy to improve the process is essential to making the change. For this example, a plausible cause could be that the night EVS crew was not performing a terminal clean and needed re-education on how to do so. Finally, controlling the process improvement and managing the change continuously in the future and making changes as needed is essential to successful implementation.
