Case Study- The Policy

You have been promoted to Police Chief of a small metropolitan police department. Your PD has a problem with high-speed chases. Under the previous Chief Brown's administration, the department engaged in fifteen (15) high speed chases in the last six months. The chases resulted in 8 deaths, 22 injuries (police and civilian), and over twenty (20) million dollars being paid out in settlements. Chief Brown was fired after the last chase that resulted in a toddler's death a week ago.

Mayor Jones believes that the high number of chases are a direct result of a couple specific factors. Mayor Jones outlined the following factors:

1) No specific policy on high-speed chases.

2) Officers lack the proper training on chases.

3) Media coverage of the high-speed chases.

4) Copycats and repeat chase offenders.

5) Ineffective departmental review process after each chase occurs.

Mayor Jones stated you must address all his concerns in your new policy. In addition, explain how you will inform the public of your new policy?
