Tom (32) and Charice (33) have been married for eight years and have four children: Ella (F, 8), Tom Jr. (M, 5), Antoine (M, 2.5), and Stella (F, 18mo). Tom is a non-commissioned officer (Sergeant) in the U.S. Marine Corps. Charice is not employed outside of the home but has a small direct-sales business, in addition to being the primary caregiver for the couple's children. The family is currently stationed in Quantico, VA. They are anticipating that Tom will receive orders for a permanent change of station (PCS) in the near future. The couple is seeking the help of a therapist to help them cope with their concerns about their third child Antoine, who is 2.5 years old. Since he was very young, the family has noticed concerning symptoms with Antoine, including extreme sensitivity to sensory stimulation and not responding to social cues such as smiling and eye contact. As they began noticing these symptoms, the couple initially consulted with their pediatrician and eventually Antoine was referred to a specialist who diagnosed Antoine with an autistic spectrum disorder. The family is currently in the process of learning about their options for Antoine. Tom and Charice are seeking therapy.
The assessment issue that I picked was Supporting other Family Members considering their siblings.
1. Explain how you might go about inquiring about this issue when talking with the client. Here, you might choose to include a specific question you would ask the client.
2. Briefly mention treatment options or supports you might incorporate into therapy, based on the clients' needs with respect to the assessment issue. This does not need to be an extensive discussion of treatment. A few sentences should be enough.
